In trying to make the most of living in the city this family engaged with SLR Architecture to maximize their outdoor enjoyment. This new roof deck has an exterior kitchen area with a grill, outside refrigerator, DW, and sink and full dining area. A retractable TV integrated into a counter rotates and allows you to watch the game from anywhere. The fire pit, and a heated umbrella were also carefully considered features and no roof deck would be complete without a hot tub! Rounding off the unique and custom features is a retractable glass skybox that opens automatically as you ascend up the stair that provides easy access and ample light to the level below while solving a zoning/building code issue.

This project required a special permit and SLR Architecture guided the client through each step of approvals, hiring a General Contractor, and ensuring that it was expertly executed.

A shingle-style home on the ocean.

This new 5000+ SF home is on Martha's Vineyard. A dramatic entry with ocean views washing over you as you enter. The first-floor plan has a generous kitchen/living/dining area large enough for extended family gatherings while also providing gorgeous views of the ocean. The office and den offer private spaces to get away from the hustle of family life while the first-floor suite gives the owners a generous bedroom for older relatives.

To reduce the scale of this large home the 2nd story was built into the roof. Both the master suite and the guest suite have private balcony views of the ocean, each bedroom has direct access to a bathroom and the clerestory space fills the 2nd floor with light while providing ocean views.

The Alaskan yellow cedar roof is one of the home’s most subtle features. The bleached shingles help soften the façade. An expansive deck and outdoor shower are necessities for Vineyard summers.

In this Needham ranch home the owner wished for an updated space, larger kitchen, and a mudroom area. The solution was to open up the formerly closed off kitchen, and carve a small mudroom area out of an existing garage entry. Careful attention was paid to defining the different uses of the larger space using lighting and furniture. A sleek Walnut floor sets the tone of the space and the modern cabinets in contrasting dark and light create visual interest Custom and adjustable lighting was added at the ceiling at each beam to provide ample lighting for each of the uses.

When the owners of this queen Anne Victorian first moved in with their 3 daughters, they loved the Brookline home’s tall ceilings, ornate detailing, and proximity to Washington Square. The only problem? It’s cramped kitchen area and it lacked a good connection to the basement and yard. They turned to SLR Architecture who expertly reconfigured the space in collaboration with interior designer Justine Sterling.

The renovation included creating a new kitchen and mudroom area at the first floor with a new entry and a sculptural stair connection to a new lower level. The lower level program included a large play area, laundry room, Au-Pair suite, and a bathroom along with some storage space.

A new large deck off of the kitchen also connected the yard to the home and allowed the girls room easier access to the outside space.

This Boston Chef client wanted to create a modern swanky Back Bay apartment that would be great for entertaining and family in this historic 1871 building. By opening up the kitchen to the living and dining to an open concept design we've increased the feeling of space. Sleek integrated appliances, high design cabinets, and simple modern finishes and lighting really make this project unique and timeless.

During the demo phase the team discovered that there was an extra foot of space above the original ceiling that we could take advantage of. The additional ceiling height allowed us to add high storage to the kitchen and added much needed extra light to the main space.

This young Newton family needed a larger kitchen and family room area for their growing family, SLR Architecture designed a small addition that has made a huge impact on the functionality of their home. The new kitchen provides plenty of room for the family to prepare meals together and the built-in booth provides a great space for casual family meals and connecting. The new kitchen is now open to an enlarged family room area so that Mom and Dad can keep an eye on the little ones .

Construction is now complete on this addition and the family is really enjoying their new space!

These two luxury townhouses were created in a formerly dilapidated tenement in the South End. SLR Architecture was able to secure approval from the Boston Redevelopment Authority for additional square footage as well as a roof deck.

The transformation created two 2,400 S.F. units that each have 3 bedrooms, 3 1/2 bathrooms, an open kitchen, living, & dining area and private exterior space along with a parking space for each unit in the back alley.

Many challenges were overcome to complete this project such as special permit approval, digging down the lowest level to gain on extra level while carefully considering waterproofing and drainage issues, also insulating an existing brick building from the 1850’s has to be done very carefully to allow the building to gain a new life and last another 100 years.

This apartment was in need of modernization, we updated 3 bathrooms, took advantage of some underutilized loft space and installed a sleek custom steel stair that helped to unify the living level.

The kitchen and dining area now borrow space from each other making both areas seem larger. The custom stair provides a separation from the living and cooking/eating areas while maintaining a visual connection.

The living area features custom recessed lighting, lots of natural light, and two seating areas. The former kitchen was a small closed room. This new kitchen is now open to the unit increasing the feeling of space.

This Master Bathroom is both small and luxurious, glass tile adorn the shower walls while marble is the material of choice for the walls and floors. A custom glass door and panel maintains the feeling of space in this efficient bath.

This custom designed steel and wood stair serves as the central hub of the unit while also embodying the modern twist that the owner was trying to create.

This 1980’s mid century home in Newton needed updating and a bit more space. The program included a more prominent entry, a bit more living space, and an office and a music composition studio, and a better appearance and long lasting exterior cladding. This dream client cared about every detail and the finish product shows.

This young family was in need of garage space, a mudroom, and a new powder room on the first floor, at the second floor they requested a master bath and kids play room. A big concern of the family was making sure that the new addition fit in nicely with the existing home and was scaled appropriately. They are excited with the end result and feel that the addition has not only added much needed interior space but enhanced it’s curb appeal as well.

A new home was conceptualized for this site after determining the existing concrete block ranch home was deemed too difficult to modify to suit the client’s needs. The site constraints were the pool had to remain in it’s existing location to satisfy zoning requirements and the mature japanese maple at the front had to remain. The program for the home included 3 bedrooms including a primary suite and office and a guest apartment for visiting friends and family and to allow for a future caretaker. This home was also designed with universal design principles in mind to ensure future mobility ease, this included a 2 stop elevator.

The pool was refurbished and the landscaping was carefully considered as well for aesthetics and accessibility. The design intent of the home was to appear modest from the road, this was done by taking advantage of the sloping site and having a 2nd level gradually appear and open up to the pool. Green and efficient design were also important to this client, the home is heated and cooled with a geothermal system and SLR Architecture also incorporated a large solar panel array on the roof that exceeds the home’s energy usage. A super insulated exterior shell helped to achieve a HERS rating of just 22 and allows the homeowner to have very minimal utility costs for this large home.

These clients in Winchester were interested in better curb appeal and a large modern kitchen addition. The curb appeal was achieved with a new large farmer’s porch and gable dormers at the 2nd floor to allow for better use of those rooms and visual interest. The bulk of the addition was in the rear and the interior on the first floor was gutted to make space for this incredible kitchen/Family /Breakfast area and an updated dining room. The resulting luxuriously comfortable space has cozy nooks to read and generous space to cook and relax

This soon to retire couple was looking to do a modest renovation to update their home and allow children and grand children to visit often and have a comfortable stay. A small addition was added to allow for a mudroom and eat-in area adjacent to the kitchen and a better connection to the exterior patio space.

The whole home was carefully updated to maximize storage and systems up to date, The intent was to bring joy to the clients and increase their enjoyment as they move into retirement.

When this Newton client purchased their home they decided it was time to update it, their first renovation experience was not ideal so when the time came for a phase 2 update they turned to SLR Architecture. The task was to update a Primary bath, Primary closet, Kids Bath, and Mudroom area. This project was we refer to as a summer slammer with the intent to be completed in time for the school year to start.

SLR Architecture was able to expedite the execution of the project through careful project management to meet the client’s goals. The design took best advantage of the available space and did not require additional space to be added.

When this longtime friend and collaborator needed a home studio to stay close to home they turned to SLR Architecture for a seamless and functional Design Studio. The carefully planned addition carved out space from where real work could be accomplished while being close enough to keep an eye on young children.

The addition manages to provide convenient and private access to a deck that expands the inside/outside connection. An informal eat in area provides space to have a quick snack, keep an eye on kids doing homework or crafting while Mom can work her magic.

This Newton client wanted to create a luxury suite for parents that come and stay for extended periods that doubled as an entertainment space for his family. The program included a Primary bedroom, kitchen/dining area, an inside/outside bar and entertainment area, an office, primary bath, and laundry area.

This project is currently under construction and these images are a good example of the realistic renderings that we are capable of creating to allow the homeowner to “See” what the space will look like before it’s complete.

This Newton Family had been dreaming about updating their home for a long time. The first floor scope included a new Kitchen, Mudroom, Pantry, and updated Dining and Living area. The second floor scope was an updated kids bath, a primary bath, new primary closet with laundry, and a renovated primary bedroom.
